the length of life

When I was a teenager, alongside Buzzcocks, Neil Young, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, The Jam, and many more (music was a most important matter then), I listened to Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine who, although I did not know that at the time, came from the area where my family is from on my father’s side. As all my tapes were packed away I youtubed him the other day when I felt like listening to him again, to realize that he is still the man I remember, a singular being doing his own thing and a really great lyricist. It seems like he too has painstakingly worked through his anger in the meanwhile, as I did.

I have been in exile for the last twenty-two years, almost as many years as I lived in the country of my birth and this song that jumped into my consciousness sounds like it also is about me : my being a child in France all those years ago and the stories I made up to try and discover who I was, and to survive.
